Riboflavin:

¨       High dose (400mg/day) riboflavin may prevent migraine headaches by promoting cellular mitochondrial oxygen metabolism.

¨       In a placebo controlled study, 3 months of taking riboflavin daily halved the number of headache days in 60% of the patients[i]

Magnesium:

¨       High dose (600mg/day) magnesium may prevent migraines through its ability to improve mitochondrial energy production, cell-to-cell communication, skeletal and smooth muscle relaxation, and serotonin and other neurotransmitter production and regulation[ii]

¨       Significant deficiencies in serum, intracellular, cerebrospinal fluid and salivary magnesium levels have been found in migraine and tension headache sufferers.

¨       A double blind, randomised, placebo controlled study, found that 600 mg of oral magnesium daily for 12 weeks significantly reduced the frequency, severity and duration of migraines by 41.6%[iii]

Feverfew (tanacetum parthenium)

Six randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trials of feverfew for the prevention of migraine in human subjects were reviewed.

The review concluded, “Feverfew is likely to be effective in the prevention of migraine”, with no major safety problems[i].
